Published 2 months ago • 4 min read

Hi Reader

It's almost time for our February Book Club Chat! I've finished Playing Big by Tara Mohr and I must say that I enjoyed quite a bit of it. So very curious to hear your insights on Wednesday 28th of February!

South African time 7 PM or NOON EST!

While I was looking at the next possible book I found it hard to decide. There were a lot of books to choose from. That's why I thought, why not make a 2024 reading list and make our lives a bit easier 😊 So that's what I did!

Now you can have a look at which books are up next, if one book a month is too much, then you can easily skip one and then join again the next month!

Looking forward to knowing which books draw your attention ✨ 📚

Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout by Cal Newport

Our current definition of “productivity” is broken. It pushes us to treat busyness as a proxy for useful effort, leading to impossibly lengthy task lists and ceaseless meetings.

We’re overwhelmed by all we have to do and on the edge of burnout, left to decide between giving into soul-sapping hustle culture or rejecting ambition altogether. But are these our only choices?

Life in Five Senses: How Exploring the Senses Got Me Out of My Head and Into the World by Gretchen Rubin

For more than a decade, Gretchen Rubin had been studying happiness and human nature. Then, one day, a visit to her eye doctor made her realize that she’d been overlooking a key element of happiness: her five senses. She’d spent so much time stuck in her head that she’d allowed the vital sensations of life to slip away, unnoticed. This epiphany lifted her from a state of foggy preoccupation into a world rediscovered by seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching.

Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...And Maybe the World by William H. McRaven

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.
On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Super communicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection by Charles Duhigg

Come inside a jury room as one juror leads a starkly divided room to consensus. Join a young CIA officer as he recruits a reluctant foreign agent. And sit with an accomplished surgeon as he tries, and fails, to convince yet another cancer patient to opt for the less risky course of treatment. In Supercommunicators, Charles Duhigg blends deep research and his trademark storytelling skills to show how we can all learn to identify and leverage the hidden layers that lurk beneath every conversation.

Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert

Gilbert offers insights into the mysterious nature of inspiration. She asks us to embrace our curiosity and let go of needless suffering. She shows us how to tackle what we most love, and how to face down what we most fear. She discusses the attitudes, approaches, and habits we need in order to live our most creative lives. Balancing between soulful spirituality and cheerful pragmatism, Gilbert encourages us to uncover the “strange jewels” that are hidden within each of us. Whether we are looking to write a book, make art, find new ways to address challenges in our work, embark on a dream long deferred, or simply infuse our everyday lives with more mindfulness and passion, Big Magic cracks open a world of wonder and joy.

Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May

An intimate, revelatory book exploring the ways we can care for and repair ourselves when life knocks us down.

Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a break up, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered.

Cringeworthy: A Theory of Awkwardness by Melissa Dahl

Have you ever said goodbye to someone, only to discover that you're both walking in the same direction? Or had your next thought fly out of your brain in the middle of a presentation? Or accidentally liked an old photo on someone's Instagram or Facebook, thus revealing yourself to be a creepy social media stalker?

Melissa Dahl, editor of New York magazine's Science of Us website, has. After a lifetime of cringing, she became intrigued by awkwardness: a universal but underappreciated emotion.

Grateful for Goodreads assisting me with the short intros 🙏🏼 I hope you appreciate the list and that this will make it easier for you to join our online book club ✨ Which is every last Wednesday of the month!

Sending you lots of love from South Africa

View in browser Don't you just love it Reader when people make something look very simple but more than often it is far from easy to get it done! Oh, Peggy, going for a 5K run, is very simple (advice from a marathon runner 😆), just put one foot in front of the other, do this at a faster speed than walking, and just as long until you get your 5K done 😂 Until I put on my running shoes and hit that first uphill 🥵 It might be SIMPLE but NOT EASY!
